An Unexpected Journey: Discovering Purpose Through Family Therapy.

Embarking on the Graduate Certification of Family Therapy was a serendipitous decision that began in a most unexpected place—a restroom during a business trip in India. Recommendations from three trusted sources led me to believe that everything would fall into place despite my initial doubts about time and resources.

As one of the few students from a non-therapy background, every aspect of the program was new and fascinating to me: from systems theory to specialized interventions for complex family dynamics. When I joined the program, I became a serious student, eager to explore. The range of therapeutic approaches covered – from strategic and structural, narrative and solution-focused, to Milan and Multi-generational Family Therapy – opened up a world of possibilities in helping clients. This exploration nudged me into other forms of therapy like psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as integrating insights from family therapy into my work in organizational psychology.

What sets this program apart is its focus on personal growth and self-reflection. I not only acquired knowledge but also gained deeper insights into my own family. The mix of face-to-face sessions and online meetings ensured a rich learning experience that catered to diverse learning styles. Moreover, the opportunity to observe live consultations with Master Family Therapist David Hong added a unique practical dimension to the learning process.

The experience of having my “internal furniture moved around" during the course was both strange and instrumental for my growth. Guided by my experienced teachers with their deep understanding of family therapy, I navigated the intense and sometimes destabilizing emotions that surfaced during the learning process. Their humility and encouragement inspired me to confront my vulnerabilities and strengths. I am also grateful for the camaraderie and support of my Batch 9 coursemates. Together, we have forged bonds that transcend the classroom, united in our shared dedication to effect positive change within systems.

As I continue to explore and evolve my therapeutic style, I am confident that I have found my true calling and strength in the field of family therapy. This program not only solidified my passion for therapy but also ignited a deeper sense of purpose – a realization that this is indeed my calling, where my strengths and aspirations align.
