We are delighted to present a comprehensive two-day couples therapy course designed to equip therapists with essential skills and strategies for effectively working with couples. Our course will explore various aspects of couples therapy, ranging from building trust and alignment to addressing complex issues such as family dynamics and communication challenges. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical exercises, and interactive discussions, participants will acquire valuable insights and tools to enrich their therapeutic practice. 

Participants will receive a e-Certificate of Completion and CPD points (awaiting LKM Approval)

About the trainer:

Narina Sidhu (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Psychology, Master of Social Science in Counseling and Psychotherapy, Graduate Diploma in Family Dispute Resolution)

Narina has been working with individuals, couples and families for over 15 years in Australia, with extensive experience in domestic violence, family separation and couple counselling; both in therapy sessions and in group work. Narina has been in private practice since 2006. In recent years she has received extensive and advanced training in family therapy with Professor Maurizio Andolfi which includes ongoing clinical supervision with him and has attended two intensive practicum on the use of self of the therapist. Furthermore, she was personally invited by Professor Andolfi to attend the Supa-Meta Practicum in July 2015 in Todi (Umbria, Italy) with 18 family therapists from around the world. She also teaches in the Maurizio Andolfi Graduate Diploma — couples module and self of the therapist module.

Course Outline

Day 1

Session 1: Therapeutic Alliance and Assessment

In this session, we will highlight the importance of building trust and alignment with both partners. Techniques for establishing rapport, particularly with resistant partners, will be explored. We will also discuss strategies for identifying key relationship issues and developing a contract for moving forward in therapy.

Session 2: History and Its Impact on the Couple

Participants will delve into exploring family of origin issues and understanding how coping styles influence the dynamics of the relationship.

Session 3: Exploring Dynamics in the Couples' Relationship

This session will focus on understanding parent, adult, and child dynamics, as well as assessing attachment styles and defense mechanisms within the couple.

Session 4: Improving Communication

Participants will learn to identify interactive patterns that keep couples stuck in poor communication and explore effective communication strategies to facilitate meaningful dialogue.

Day 2

Session 5: Dealing with Anger and Conflict in a Couple’s Relationship

Anger and conflict are among the main reasons couples seek therapy. Here, we will learn how to effectively manage anger and conflict. The art of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries will also be explored as part of the solution.

Session 6: Special Topics: Children and Divorce

Participants will explore techniques for engaging children and family members in the therapeutic process, as well as strategies for working with couples who are separating.

Session 7: Special Topics: Sexual Intimacy and Abuse

This session will address sensitive topics such as sexual and intimacy issues and how to effectively address abuse within the relationship.

Session 8: Creative Interventions

Participants will be introduced to various creative interventions, including using sculpture, incorporating rituals and letters into therapy, and utilizing other innovative approaches like role-playing, guided imagery, and photos.

Our proposed two-day couples therapy course offers a comprehensive and practical approach to addressing the complexities of working with couples. Through engaging sessions and hands-on exercises, participants will gain valuable skills and insights to enhance their therapeutic practice and better support couples in achieving healthier and more fulfilling partnerships.
